Although a Championship course in length the shorter hitter of the ball
will not suffer the long carries from the tee to reach the fairways synonymous
with many courses of this type, making it enjoyable for all standards
of players.
In general, accuracy is the main key. There is no room for "bailing out"
for the best part of the round, as you plot your way through the gorse
lined tight lie fairways. This feature of the course provides the marvellous
feeling of solitude as you can play many holes before you encounter other
groups of Golfers.
After your round, you will feel fulfilled as a Golfer having had every
aspect of you game "put to the test" and most probably had to use every
club in your bag.
The first three holes, being comparatively open, ease you into your round
providing a chance to "warm up" before the run of four very challenging
par fours that follow them. The superb bowl green at the 8th par three
breaks up this run and is followed by, what should be, a birdie opportunity
at the par five 9th. The stunning par four 10th turns you back in a westerly
direction towards the clubhouse.
In the winter of 2001/02 the club invested £50K on re-designing
the 10th and 11th holes. The 10th was "softened" to provide
an easier driving line and a more interesting approach shot, which has
resulted in all round critical acclaim. The old 11th hole, which was considered
too easy and uninteresting, is now played from a new teeing site, increasing
the length by 50 yards. The fairway is carved through an attractive avenue
of silver birches and gorse to a slightly elevated green.
On the remaining seven holes, there is one par three and three par fives,
which allow you to "open up" a shade more.
The last six holes of the course are, affectionately known to the members,
as "the flats" as they are very close to sea level, have flat rippling
links tight fairways and are easily viewed from the magnificent new clubhouse
which is set up above them.
Alongside the course lies an extensive practise
ground with specified areas for driving, iron play/pitching, shortgame/bunker
play and a green. There is also a large practise putting green adjacent
to the 1st tee.
